While we're talking about crappie I figure I would post this one up. Anyone ever caught one? They call it a magnolia crappie. Cross between a female white and black male. Only one I've ever caught. Got him last spring I believe it was.

That I'm not sure. I stocked a few crappie in my pond last year and now have a few striped nose ones. I heard Richard Gene say they are common in Arkansas. I got my fish from stock my pond out of Arkansas.

There’s a difference in a black nose crappie and a Magnolia crappie. Black nose is a naturally occurring marking in some fish. I don’t know if they’re a cross or not. Magnolias are a hybrid that are either sterile or have very low reproductive rates. They are bred for pond stocking

Arkansas black nose crappie. Very common in pond stocking. Not sterile unless it is a hybrid.

I don’t believe so, at least not by naked eye. The magnolia crappie is a cross between a female white, and a male black nose. The eggs are then pressure treated to make them sterile. Last I heard, they have about abandoned that experiment. Not enough demand and cost to produce was high
