Young male goats sick

Young male goats sick - 04/24/20 09:23 AM

Our first 2 baby goats were recently put into a new we built off the old barn we have. Everything was going great until a 2 days ago. We noticed one was lame and swimmy eyed and constantly crying and struggling to urinate. We took him to Dr Berry in Piedmont and at first we though he would be fixed up. He was kept 2 nights and passed. I buried him yesterday morning. This afternoon his brother started acting the same. My wife has cried constantly and its been hard on me as well. The vet treated him for CV urinary something. I think we will be selling remaining goats. Any insight into what causes this?

Cocidiousis possibly? I lost several goats to it years ago before I knew what it was. Maybe our resident vet will be along shortly to help you out.

Little early got Coccidia. Worms are the number 1 killer of goats and sheep.

How old are these goats and what are they eating?

Coccidia is what the vet said. Age 8 months old. Feed was TSC brand goat feed.

Coccidiosis doesn't cause urinary problems in goats. Causes the squirts and failure to thrive. Wouldn't expect it to kill an 8 month old goat. Male goats are especially bad about urolithiasis blocking them up leading renal failure. Metabolic neuroligical signs can occur as well late in the disease. Very common in goats feed high protein concentrate grain diets. If that's all they've been eating I'd highly suspect they were blocked based on what you've said. They've got to have roughage as well, and access to plenty of clean water.

Daniel White made a post on here about goats a long time ago. His words rang true when he said a goat is the only animal in the world that is born looking for a place to die.

Look to see if they are eating something that's poison, like mountain laurel.

never seen coccidiosis cause urinary probs in deer, just the squirts. I have seen urinary probs in male fawns from bottle feeding, usually caused by source of water to mix bottle. To much calcium.

An old horseman told me years ago a horse spends all day , everyday, thinking up a way to kill you or himself. I believe him.
