Boerboels - 01/11/21 09:42 PM

I'm looking into getting a South African Mastiff, aka Boerboel... My interest is three fold- 1) home family dog, 2) hunting camp guardian, and 3) try to train blood tracking (i've trained 2 under the Jeanenny model. Has anyone had experience with these?

I've been running one track a week. Deer liver and blood. He's starting to get it. He's a little slower, but deliberate in his search. I like that he works it slow. I haven't gotten to take many pics during the tracks because I'm working him, not being his photographer. He's 4.5 mo's old now and 57 lbs.

Zorro says he's gonna do a training track this weekend... been a few weeks... He seems to be more visually oriented right now and I have to get him a little of his energy out before he will work the trail. It's hard to take pics while he is working. Here is one of him riding with me. He could be a cartoon character!

You need to buy that big joker a harness so he can drag them out also. Lol

Zorro got another one on Monday. 75 yards... he tracked the whole thing. I think he gets that this is his "Job" now. He loves it!

It sure did! I think that was the big deal for him. He had been doing liver drags during the summer, but finding that first deer was the ticket. When I cleaned it, he was yanking on the skin and wouldn't leave it alone. He's hooked! More adventures to come!

Zorro found his third deer yesterday. It was a doe.... ran 350 yards. Shot with a crossbow, the bolt was covered in stomach material. The hunter bumped it when he got down, but he didn't know that. (We found the bed only about 60 yards from the hit site. No visible blood, but it must have been leaking something, because he found it within 15 minutes. I'm having a ball watching him work and learning to read him. He is so excited we I tell him "Find It, Zorro, Find it!" he loves it!

Zorro got his 4th deer last night. He and his best buddy, RoRo tracked a gutshot doe about 800 yards. We didn't start till 10:30... took us 2 hours. I got back home to Gulf Breeze at 2:30... long night, but a great lesson and training track for a dog who turns 11 months old tomorrow.

Re: Boerboels - 01/08/22 03:18 PM

Well, Zorro found two deer this week. Both were short tracks, but good for his confidence and good for me to learn to read him. The first was a doe shot in the evening and the second was his first rack buck that my daughter shot. The buck was was a weird one with 5 pts on one side and 2 on the other. It had an underbite and short nose... odd, but great hunt for my daughter who is home from college in South Florida.
