308 free bore - 03/23/18 07:53 PM

Been trying loads for a Interarns mark x, 308 it has a long free bore ,if i use a180 gr nosler hunting bullet i can seat them to fit the rifle follower. but i still have jump of .133 + or -
has any one tried a single shot follower, that that would let me seat .045 off lands useing IMr 4895 starting att 41.5 & working up.

My Remington 700 also has a lot of freebore, about .142 with a 168 grain AMAX. I guess SAMMI standard throats have this much freebore.

In a hunting rifle, I say hell with throat and load to fit magazine. Dedicated BR rig is another story. Also I've never had much luck with 180s in a 308. My 308s twist rate is cool with 165s, but 168 and up and it gets angry. However, my barrel was selected with 150-165 in mind when it was put on.

Is this a hunting rig or a paper punching rig?

I only only carry, 1 0r 2 shells when hunting, would like my hunting loads paper target tight , when deer hunting.m.o.a. or less.

Why do you only carry 1-2 when hunting? I hunt with a single shot (Ruger No 1) often but still bring about 5 with me. In a bolt gun, I fill the magazine. If you're not concerned about filling the magazine, by all means, drop the cartridge into the chamber by hand.

what i'am trying to work out is the free bore space. to cut bullet jump from .133 + down to .045 or less, use a single shot follower just to make things easy. have you tried one.

Re: 308 free bore - 03/24/18 09:25 PM

No, have never used a single shot follower and don't see any scenario where I would consider one. In a hunting weapon, many times your length is determined by the magazine length rather than distance from the lands. I've got a 7 STW that has about .100 jump but it still holds about .75 MOA. Sure I'd like to experiment more with seating depth but I'm limited by my magazine. No way would I change that bolt gun into a single shot.

My magazine load is .133 jump. with 180 nosler ,it holds like yours 100 yd.close to 2 inches at 200. its a drop in add on, remove it any time.

Some rifles like a jump, some like to be jammed in the rifling. Have you tried loading some longer and seeing if you get a benefit in accuracy? If you do and you don’t mine not having additional cartridges, go for it. You may find any accuracy change is so small it isn’t worth messing with.

Is your interarm a std length action which would give you plenty of room in the magazine to seat the bullets to the lands?

IMO it is more important to use good brass with no more than .001 run out.

Re: 308 free bore - 03/24/18 11:58 PM

au338 mag. my shells are loaded to the full size of internal magazine. still short , .133+. as for the brass its all clean , size case ck.
. long bullets let me seat them at .305-8,and still allows room for 42.5 gr. inr 4895. loading 41.5, with a long bullet seating .305-8 will get me to .045 off lands. just trying for small groups.some bullets has a long boat tail, that take up powder space. like Hornaday. can't get good seating with them.

Re: 308 free bore - 03/25/18 06:52 PM

I'm confused by some of the terminology you use. When you say "seat them at .305-8", are you saying you have about .305-8" of the bullet in the case? Boat tails do force you to seat deeper when trying to get to max COL. May try using a flat base bullet.

Re: 308 free bore - 03/25/18 07:44 PM

riflenut do you reload, look at hornaday boattails ,Nosler there diff. boat tails size.yes seating depth in the case .305 + 308 has a short neck to work with,so you still need a long bullet to get to the lands, eld-x , some sst's , A-max. pro hunter 180 is use for long free bore. even flat base you need 178-180. flat base allows more powder.but heavy bullets use less.I use a.o.l. gauge& bullet comparator to measure off ogive for seating depth,& jump. Thanks for helping.

Re: 308 free bore - 03/25/18 08:30 PM

Of course I reload. Your poor grammar and unclear terminology makes understanding what you're saying and asking difficult. Load up some long ones as far out as you can go and still have about 1 caliber of contact in the case. If they give you better accuracy, then consider the single shot follower if that's what you want. If not, then scrap the idea and load to magazine length. Not real complicated.

Look into Barnes.
(What?!? Dave suggested Barnes!?!)

Yup those long X bullets will cut down on bullet jump...or just find what that .308 likes and use that. Once knew a .270 that liked 150s and RN corelokt's especially the hogs didn't care for them at all.
