eagle beans or rr soy beans

eagle beans or rr soy beans - 04/05/17 08:24 PM

This Will be my first year planting summer plots. I've heard a lot of good things about the eagle beans but it just seems to me that I could plant almost twice as( much for the money) in rr soy beans ultimately proving more food for the money. I do realize more seed more fertilize.

How many acres are you looking to plant? I will say that I can tell a difference between Eagle beans and generic beans. It's as if the deer couldn't kill them off. They kept coming back no matter how much browsing they did. Now, is that worth the extra cost?...I don't know.

You may also want to consider that if they are able to mature, the Eagle seed beans have the potential to produce a lot more forage. Here is a snapshot of some I grew in the garden (well-fertilized). Large Lad leaves are huge. Ag. beans only get a few feet tall, whereas these were 5+ feet. I'm certainly no expert and have limited experience, but that's my experience so far...

I was originally going to plant 3 acers in eagle beans. I might plant both. We have 146 acers and 12 acers are row crop plantable. Did you plant your beans in rows or broad cast it?

Broadcast. Maybe some of the more experienced guys will chime in.

Broadcast works fine, we did about 4 acres of e fenced Eagles last year and it turned out great. Add 7 lbs of rr corn to it and its even better.I fenced mine last year and actually kept the fence up too long and lost some of the nutritional benefit. Thats the problem with being 350 miles from my farm.

This year I am going to plant about the same acreage in the corn/bean mix and ring it with a 50 foot buffer of Sunn Hemp and Peas. Gonna plant everything at the same time and see if I can get by without fencing. Also gonna plant an acre or two of Sunflowers, but hey will definitely have to be fenced.

The Eagle beans are similar to hay beans. They grow at a faster rate and produce a lot more forage. If you have a large deer herd and a small amount of plot area, the Eagle beans will have a better chance at producing. And don't forget we have both, Eagle Beans and Ag Beans at Wilborn Outdoors.

Do you sell Lab Lab? Or know people that have tried it. I've seen a couple of plots here in Florida and the deer hammered it, but even tho they were small plots they never did devastate it.

When do you guys recommend planting the soybeans and corn. Can you plant early to mid-May or wait til June?

Either/or. It all depends on rain. Mine won't get planted till late May best case scenario.

How much fertilize did you use broadcasting/planting ?

Not the right amount lol As usual I was pushed for time and did not get a soil test. Since I had corn in it I just hit it with 300 lbs/ac of triple 13 and it grew pretty good.Actually it grew too good. By the time I got up there and got the e-fence off it the deer could not even get in it.This year I am testing and will do it right. Also gonna see if I can get away with not fencing it.

I broadcast eagle beans last year on 2 x (1AC) plots. Yes, small for the deer density. I used Milorganite and liquid fence to let them mature. Once I let them in, the deer never left the field. They were bedding and feeding in 6ft tall beans until they ate them all about two weeks into bow season.
