4,000 acres, Sumter Co., only 12 members- - 03/12/18 05:43 PM
We have 4,000 acres in one track in north Sumter Co behind one locked gate, with a big, comfortable camp house and surrounding camp grounds. Only 12 members total, with two spots available. Camper hook up-available. We may have a bedroom available in an existing camp-owned mobile home. Currently, 5 members live in camp house, and the other 5 members occupy other portable buildings like campers, modest sized mobile homes and portable wood Mennonite built cabins.
Guests are NOT allowed for deer hunting. The guys that pay the big bucks get to shoot the big bucks! Immediate family members may hunt, but of your TWO allotted bucks, any deer they take comes off your two. Member must be present. We only harvest big mature bucks. No exceptions! Does may be shot as desired, but President can limit that amount based upon sightings or other criteria. Hogs can be shot anytime. I would not describe the group as ”Hard Core” hunters. However, the club is very serious about ONLY killing big bucks, but a very friendly, helpful group.
Our average member’s age is older than most clubs, and most sons are adults now. We have year ‘round use of club except the 6 weeks of turkey season. Sorry, Turkey rights not included. Average number of total hunters per deer weekend is from 5-7. Very little pressure. Primarily many stages of pines, but enough hardwoods along many creeks throughout the property. Over 40 large green fields. Most shooting houses hold two persons. We have the money, equipment and conviction to plant green fields right! For Fall planting, we only use Mossy Oak Biologic various seeds, and we plant peas in Spring. This club is over 25 years old. We are 7 miles north of York just off AL Hwy 17 and only 15 minutes to Livingston. We have no history of theft problems. Roads are great, but after deer season begins, you must use wheelers only.
This club is in continuing consultation with game/fish,-QDM program. The biologist from Tuscaloosa says we are in great shape now with lots of older age class bucks, and all for only a small group of hunters.
During deer season, on Friday and Sat night, plus Sat and Sunday mornings, great southern cooking is optional for a very small cost per meal. 2 of our active guys love to cook! Base dues are $2,750 for fall planting and lease cost. Then each member pays 1/12 monthly of other expenses as they occur, such as utilities, TV, land line phone, spring planting, insurance, maintenance , deer corn, tractor fuel, repair, camp supplies ,etc. (about $150 per month) Total of all dues cost runs about $4,250 annually. Yes, it is expensive, but this group wants to keep it this way as to low # of members. If you can afford it, it is worth it. If interested, please PHONE Larry Torgerson , in Meridian at 601-938-9867 for full details. He is not set up to post or reply on AlDeer.
I am a new member, age 72, and a lifelong hunter. I think I know a good club when I see one having founded and managed a very popular club in the past for 20 years in Sumter County. From a new member’s perspective, you could also call me, Rick, in Birmingham, at 205-305-9600. Please don’t request PMs. I don’t track this site daily, so just call. Thanks.
