Do deer like em? When do they produce?

Re: Food Plot Trees - 09/16/16 10:07 PM

Deer love them! Actually this variety is also grown in orchards for commercial production and marketed for human consumption. It's the sweetest chestnut I've ever eaten. They are the largest sized nut as well. They average around 150lbs. of nuts per tree at age of 12-15 years.

About when does that variety drop?

Re: Food Plot Trees - 09/17/16 12:26 PM

How many do you have? I'd like to buy 6 of them but don't want to pick them up until around Christmas. Is that okay?

I have around 200 of them. They drop typically in October. I also have some larger 3yr olds in a 3gal pot. I have about 300 of them. Thanks

When do you plant them? Spring?

Re: Food Plot Trees - 09/19/16 06:19 PM

Fall. November-December is the best time in my opinion. That's when I plant mine.

These are the 3 year olds that I have. $15 each.

At about what age do they start to produce nuts. I love those things.

Re: Food Plot Trees - 09/19/16 08:22 PM

I've got some Sawtooths that I planted from acorns 7 years ago. I put tree tubes around them. The ones plated in the best soil are close to 20 feet tall with a 12-15 foot canopy. They haven't had a single acorn on them yet.

They're 2 more barren years away from firewood!

I want 6 of the small ones and 2 of the big ones. Pay when I pick up?

Re: Food Plot Trees - 09/19/16 08:49 PM

I have some sawtooths that have not dropped as well that are about that age. Most started dropping last year but some haven't yet. Yeah just call me whenever you want to pick up. Thanks

Not really

Re: Food Plot Trees - 09/19/16 08:57 PM

Don't have any plans to come to Tuscaloosa

Re: Food Plot Trees - 09/20/16 08:14 AM

There are a few of my sawtooths that have always been bare too. You'll always have a few that will never produce but all of em shouldn't be bare. If they haven't produced for ya by next year, cut em down, grind the stump, and plant more.

Screw a deer and foodplot. I love them things. The trees stink, better not step on the husk barefooted, but would love about 4 in my yard. Not a difficult tree to grow either. If anyone buys any I highly recommend putting at least one where deer can't get to.

You would need at least 2 tree's where deer can't get to so they will fertilize each other.
