What factory shell do you have the most confidence will pass through a deers front shoulder and exit through the other?? Nosler Partition is not an option due to poor accuracy from my rifle. Hornady SST has failed repeatedly, even on a pass through on ribs. I love a 25-06 but would never own another because of availability and selection of ammo.

I've been shooting a 25-06 for about 15 years and have tried several different factory loads. My rifle shoots the most consistent pattern with the Hornady 117 grain Light Magnum round. I've had one deer make it out of the field, and he landed about thirty yards outside the field he was shot in.

I don't see those listed on the Hornady website?

I'm not sure how to post pictures, but see if this link works. It's a picture of the box with all the info on it. If the link doesn't work, I can email it to you.

What I'm saying are you sure they are still making them?? I haven't seen them at Cabelas, Bass Pro, Midway, etc.

Just read Light Magnums have been discontinued.

I'd try the 100gr Barnes ttsx. There's a particular member on here I sold one too and it loves the Barnes.

Barnes Vortex 100 grain Tipped TSX. You find a deer that can tote that off and I'll kiss your arse

Yea, I'm open to all suggestions. Looking for peoples particular experience. I had a friend once that had a herd of goats he tested bullets on. Wasn't long before them goats would see his truck coming and they would outrun any deer around!!

Tried them on targets. Shoots great but hard to chamber in my rifle. Seems the bullet needs to be seated a little deeper.

Our academy up here is loaded with those 25-06 Barnes if you need me to ship you a box.

Re: 25-06 shooters?? - 01/17/15 08:20 PM

I know they are hard to find, so that may explain it. I guess I'm in the same boat as you then. I've tried the Remington Core-Lokt and a Winchester BTSP years ago, but they both seemed to be a little all over the place.

I bought a box at the beginning of rifle season at Mark's Outdoors here in Bham. I've tried to buy a box or two every time I find them. I guess I'm lucky that I have several boxes now. . .

Re: 25-06 shooters?? - 01/17/15 08:24 PM

LOL Matt we posted at the same time.

I wouldn't be afraid to shoot a deer at any angle with them or any elk for that matter with a 25-06. I've killed 3 with that rifle you sold me this year 2 of them never took a step and one fairly heavy bodied buck made it about 30 yards but he was wrecked internally.

That rifle was a shooter. Nothing pretty about it but definitely one of better ones I've had.

Really?? I didn't know they carried them. I don't live far from one but they don't have them there. I really would like to find someone with some so I could see how it chambered before I bought them. My gun is finicky. Appreciate the offer though.

Accuracy is not the problem. Bullet performance has been. Shot one through the ribs that the bullet was just under the skin on opposite side. Shot one in the shoulder and it didn't even damage the opposite shoulder.

I have an Xbolt 25-06 and it loves the Remington core lokt. ..in the 100 grain version. Haven't had one run yet after being shot. However shot placement is key to any round that you chose to shoot

Re: 25-06 shooters?? - 01/17/15 09:45 PM

My 25-06 likes 120 grain Core-Lokts. This is the only one I tried that got consistent pass throughs on deer and hogs. I've never tried the Barnes. I did try the SGK and was not impressed.

I've yet to recover a monolithic all copper bullet from a deer, whether it be a Barnes TSX from my .257WBY, a Barnes TTSX from my 25-06, or a Hornady GMX from my 25-06. Bullets blow all the way through the deer...two holes, every time.

Wife an out of the box Remington 700, and shoots 117 grain hornady American whitetail. They shoot very consistent groups at a 100 yards.

Re: 25-06 shooters?? - 01/17/15 11:36 PM

I have a remington sendaro in 25-06.
I load Nosler ballistic tips for it.
95 grains are good 85 grains kill a whitetail like the hammer of Thor.

For years we got piles of doe tags from the DMAP.
During that time I had a run where I killed 44 deer in 46 shots from that rifle.
Even double lung shots with the 85 grain seemed to stop the deer in a few steps.
Many would back up a step then drop. On longer shots, say 300 to 400 yards they tend to run 50-75 yards when double lunged. There is something about the ballastic shock of that combo that rocks on whitetails! I mostly bow hunt now but I ocasionally take a rifle, Deer run farther when shot with a 300 win mag than that 25-06

Great choice of caliber!
