Huge Dallas county buck - 02/05/24 12:45 AM

Is no one going to post the huge buck killed in Dallas county yesterday that’s on BDL’s Gettin Outdoors Facebook page? Think it would impress a few members

That's the worst picture, by far, that I've seen of it.
Posted By: Mbrock

Re: Huge Dallas county buck - 02/05/24 01:10 AM

To be 176 it has to score close to 170” as a 4x4 and add the drop tine. I don’t usually call out an erroneous score but that deer is WAY bigger than that picture indicates if it touches 170”.

Either way it’s a beast. Congrats to the hunter.

178 6/8 is what the post says. That's a bunch for a 4x4 with a big droptine, but one of the pictures looks possible

I may have to join the Matt camp on this. I didn't look that closely to the post on FB, but 178 seems a stretch. I could see 165, maybe. Regardless, that's one heck of an AL deer.

Re: Huge Dallas county buck - 02/05/24 01:18 AM

It’s a dang GIANT of an 8, but I’d be willing to bet when it’s officially measured by someone else (not the taxidermist) it’ll fall in the 160s.

I thought so lol.

I’d like to see/hear when it’s officially scored just for curiosity. It is a huge deer. Some times a deer that big can be deceiving in pictures. There’s no doubt I could see him approaching 170”.

No sir I don’t. I did find a matching set of sheds from a 167” 8 point down there in turkey season though. Your goofy brother lost them!!!! One of the fellas down there killed him the following year. He was a GIANT.

Yeah I’ve held it in my hands. It grossed 168 or 169 and netted 162 as a 4x4. Honestly, it’s one of the most impressive deer I’ve seen in person from AL.

I can add a little context to supplement the pictures. The inside spread is 21". The main beams are over 30". That is about as long as the arm of a six-foot-tall man.

It'll end up grossing 165 plus or minus 2". Also the white sandy soil in that pic doesn't look like the Dallas county soils I am familiar with.

There have been a couple for sure. Less than 40 170 8 pointers have been entered into the record books. North America ALL TIME!

This guy killed an awesome buck. But to pretend it is in the top 40 all time 8 pointers is just silly.

Look at some of the pics of 170” 8 points that are documented. This deer is no where close to 170. Low to mid 150s at best. This deer doesn’t have the mass it would take to push him towards 170.

That is a much better picture to judge. You can see the main beam length better and that buck has long brow tines. 30" mains are pretty rare. I would have guessed 25-26" mains based on the first photos.

You wont have to use all 30" of your tape before you get to the end of either one of those beams. They wrap around good but not 30" worth of good. Prob 25 - 26" When I said he was 165 plus or minus 2", I was using 26" for the beam length. Great deer but 30" beams dont happen often, on even world record type deer. I think the longest beams ever recorded on a whitetail were somewhere around 33". For reference, I looked it up: Milo Hanson's world record typical buck's beams were both just a hair over 28". That deer had a 28" inside spread and still did not have 30" beams. Fantastic, one in a lifetime buck anyway you cut it.

Great buck but still don't think it is anywhere near 176. I shot a huge 8 in 2017 that had 23 and 24 in. mains with a 20 in. inside and 23 in. outside and it scored 145. Don't see a 30 in. difference there.

Re: Huge Dallas county buck - 02/06/24 01:32 AM

The Dallas county buck is an exceptional deer especially as a mainframe 8 and from Alabama. I don’t personally care what it scores and I’d be plum tickled to kill him. However I don’t think most folks fully understand how much bone it takes to make 170’s as a mainframe 8 point. Below is a deer that scored 183 as an 8 point for reference. It takes coke can size mass, long beams and tines to get into those type scores.

Re: Huge Dallas county buck - 02/06/24 01:57 AM

I’ve seen some other pics of the deer and I can easily see him hitting the 170s. It’s hard for a deer that big to not look that big on a southern framed deer, but this one is a prime example. He may actually be larger than he appears.

Re: Huge Dallas county buck - 02/06/24 02:00 AM

That’s a monster deer either way who cares what it scores. I’ll bet the hunter doesn’t. I have never had the opportunity to shoot one anywhere close to that size.

I was thinking of this buck when this thread popped up. One thing on him, though...the 183 inches is net...this deer, killed in Illinois by Jason Sanders, grossed a little over 192".

Here's a better pic that cuts out the funky angles (which makes the buck's right side look a lot weaker than the left)....

I coached Torrey in Dixie Senior baseball and played against him for years in softball and I can attest to the fact that he goes at everything hardcore. He grew up that way. His uncle is one of the finest athletes to come from the area. His whole family, immediate and extended, are very competitive people. Torrey was a very good, but undersized QB on a good high school football team. I know Torrey is proud of this deer although it is not much consolation as he recently lost his father, who started his love of hunting, fishing, and ball playing. Congrats to him. He's a good person and if anyone deserves, by virtue of being a good person, and putting in effort, to kill a deer like this, then it is Torrey. Some kill a deer of this caliber through luck and others by effort and persistence. Torrey's was the latter, I can guarentee.

My friend went to his house to clean his heater while they were at the funeral home

I thought I recognized him from the picture but haven’t seen him in a long time. Jawbone when you posted his name it jostled my memory of how I knew him. We attended water school together. He was a super nice guy back then for sure. Thanks for reminding me.

So many of you were right about the deer not grossing 178”. You were low. Took the deer to Alabama Whitetail Museum today. The deer scored 170” typical and 180 1/8” non typical.

It's worth mentioning that Alabama Whitetail Museum and Alabama Whitetail Records are one and the same and there have been numerous threads on here over the years about the people there, doing the scoring, not having a clue. Big differences between the AWR scores and final certified P&Y and B&C scores, on multiple heads. Not saying that is the case here, just mentioning it. Maybe they got that problem fixed. A 180" mainframe 8 is a world class animal, anywhere, much less here in AL. If that's what he officially scores, as Matt said above, the pics dont do it full justice. Fine buck. He's a super stud and congrats again to the hunter.

Re: Huge Dallas county buck - 03/08/24 07:33 PM

It's all good... you know I've never seen a 170 inch 8 pointer before. Glad to know Alabama is capable of producing such a monster....

Look at it this way.. . the largest 8 EVER submitted to B&C according to google is 183-1/8. For the longest time the World Record was tied at 180 3/4 with the 3rd being 179.

Woulda have been a World Record next year?

I wonder how many World Class bucks have been shot in Alabama over the year.. based on this thread no telling... maybe I've shot one.

This guy needs to be on the front cover of North American Whitetail.

But something tells me that ain't happening.

Looking at the picture posted I have a hard time not believing my eyes. But, I still want to say congrats to the hunter. It is a heck of a deer.

Re: Huge Dallas county buck - 03/09/24 02:41 AM

Hope he wasn't just a real good 3 or 4 year old. We should all learn to pass on that deer. Even if you have NEVER seen a deer that good before, you should let him walk off and let the lucky neighbor shoot him. But you can get the " i passed him" badge of honor... doesn't take a much space on the wall as a shoulder mounted 3-4 yr old deer.

A friend of mine killed a 160 inch 8 point,10 years ago, it's a huge rack. If this deer really scores what they posted, its huge. Congrats!!!

I wouldn’t pass up a 180” deer no matter what age he is. That is a totally different situation than passing a 125-130” 3 year old. But one thing is certain. That deer ain’t 3.
