Dang do you guys often see deer in open hardwoods like that? So picturesque. I feel like I have to be in/near thick cover to see anything.

The majority of the areas that I hunt in MS and AL are big open hardwoods like that....have killed some good deer in both places and yes, I see a lot of deer in them.....something about hunting those hardwoods and seeing them cruising thru........

Sat this morning and didn’t see anything. Maybe tomorrow my back will feel better and I’ll sit longer for the cold weather.

There is a thicket to the left below the bench, they bed in it and pop up onto the bench move through and feed.

There is also a big timber company pine desert thicket near where I’m sitting and they funnel around the ridge to this bench.

I have put 3 on the wall and seen a bunch more from exactly where I was sitting on the ground in this pic, but you got to have the right wind and thermals to make it work.

Re: LFTT 1-29-24 - 01/29/24 09:30 PM

my deer were active from about 11:30 last night until 3 this morning. i will sit in my shooting shed this evening anyhow. very little stain showing on tarsal glands. three young bucks have been cruising late, but eating rather than bothering the ladies. gotta go hot before long ...

Sitting on my field in Greene County, watching a spike feed. They are logging some paper company land up the road about half a mile. Hopefully they will push some deer my way.

Back in the shooting house where I killed my good 8 back in December . Haven’t hunted it but once since . Bad weather, been sick , keeping grand babies, going to grand babies ball games , too lazy . Plenty of excuses why I haven’t been back .

All makes sense. Gorgeous.

When I was first learning to deer hunt I had access to some big woods like that near my house but without bedding nearby. I must have sat there 20+ times and never saw but 2 deer. Both were bucks being chased by a couple of farm dogs. Shooters. They came and went so quickly that I didn't even pull the trigger.

Ended up seeing two spikes and 6 does. The spikes were chasing the does away from the corn. They came out late, 5:40 pm.

Had very awesome hunt

My #2 deer showed - 4 year old 9 w great brows - aint seen him in 5-6 weeks. Missing a brow now and A point was also chipped r it would been hard not to shoot. Got mass - should blow up next year. Washed for 10-12 minutes - lip curl - chase doe and feed

Then one came in late right after legal - think it may hav been my best deer - could not shoot - awesome hunt finally

Its on here

does showed up 5 minutes past end of legal shooting light/time. wouldn't have mattered if a buck HAD shown up chasing them. too late ...

Re: LFTT 1-29-24 - 01/30/24 02:51 AM

Didn’t kill anything but ended up seeing 17. Mostly does. 5 little little ones same young six from this morning and one that ran a does out then stayed right inside the wood line at just past shooting light.
Great day nothing to put in the freezer but that ok too.
