First gun first deer

I always make this post around opening day of gun season, but what gun were you using when you killed your first deer how old were you and how did it happen???

I had no interest in hunting until after high school. I was 19 or 20. Shot a big doe with an old marlin 30-30. I keep meaning to pick that gun up again. It’s been a while since I’ve dropped one with it.

12 gauge Rem 11-48 around 1967 dog hunting

20 ga double, shooting slugs. 16 years old.

Killed my first deer, a button head with an older Winchester bolt action 30/06 that was my stepdad’s.

Single barrel 20ga with a slug. Think I was 7 or 8 sitting in my Papa's tractor shed with a window overlooking a small grasspatch.

That gun would bloody your nose if you weren't careful.

I think I killed my first deer 4 years ago, don't even know the caliber of the rifle. Friend took me out and handed me his rifle, we were walking back to the truck after sitting in a stand all morning and I saw a doe and shot it.. Carried it out over my shoulders

7 08 ,13 yrs old, deer walked up I shot looked back down there and she was still standing there shot again and she dropped. Got to her and saw a dead deer and a blood trail. I got 2 does so I was an outlaw from the get go

Mossberg 500 pump with double 00 buckshot on a dog drive. It was a doe and I was twenty.

6.5x55, 18yrs old I guess, I was stalk hunting. I stepped into a sagefield with some small pines. The stupid buck jumped up and just stood there broadside about 30yds, so I shot him. A little basket racked 6pt. In my mind he was 200inches. I had hunted since I was 12yo by my self every time and this was the first buck I ever got a shot at. Been deer hunting 30yrs and I still love it like the first time I went. I sure wish I still had that 6.5x55

15 years old Doe 243 winchester bolt action. I cant elaborate on the details of the hunt.

Stevens .270 that I had bought from Academy the night before I went hunting. I bore sighted the gun the night I bought it. Climbed a tree the very next morning with a old steel boomerang style face the tree climber. Got a late start got in the tree about 7:20 that morning shot him while he was rubbing a tree at 7:50. Trailed him about 150 yards through a swamp. Found him in 3 ft of water with his butt being the only thing sticking out of the water. He was a very unique 6 point. He had a bad limp with what appeared to be a tumor on his leg and hardly a tooth in his head. He looked like a very old deer.

Sure seems like most of us started hunting or shooting at deer in our teens. If this same conversation is posted 20 yrs from now over half the people are gonna say 3-10 yrs old. Wonder why we rush em so early these days

17 y/o Rem 870 little doe walked out on me as I was walking through the woods!

.22 mag when I was 6 years old. My uncle took me to his patch behind his barn. I missed the first shot and killed the second shot.

12 yo Remington 7400 243 and yes I still have that gun

14 years old, Thanksgiving weekend 1983. Ruger M77, 7X57. Sitting in a wooden ladder stand about 50 yards off railroad tracks. Shot a spike just before he was about to cross the tracks.

Killed my first deer with a McPherson bow. I was about 12. First deer I ever killed with a rifle was with a .270. I believe out of all the deer I’ve killed with a rifle over the years, only one has been with something other than a .270.

14 yr old sitting in a death trap climbing stand about 15 ft up an Ash tree, about 50 yards from where I sit now. NEF 270 , 4 pointer came out of a pine thicket @ 15 yards, first deer I saw that day. That was back in the mid 90s when we had 3 for days per year.

16 years old. Remington Model 700ML .50cal. Bought it with my own money for $234.00 at Websters Sporting Goods in Bolivar, TN. I guess I didn't need to be 18 because black powder is a non-firearm??? Killed a fat doe out of my tree lounge that fall. Still have both of them. Hunted with the 700 yesterday.

H&R 243. 8-Point. I was 13. Still have the mount 22 years later.

Nov. 2, 1987. I was 18 years old. On a dog drive in Homerville, Ga. Remington 1100 12Ga. using 2 3/4” 00Buck. Old 7pt swamp buck. The old guys talked about a buck that always escaped by exiting the drive near where the dog drivers would park and enter the block of timber. So, that’s where I stood. (Plus the cooler was there, it was hot.) He came out into a clear cut and ran right for the trucks. Plan worked.

1992 hatchet creek hunting club running dogs . Big doe with a 20ga buckshot. I can still picture it like it was yesterday.

1987, 8 years old, Remington 1100 12g.

During that period of time we hunted a piece of property called Dominik on County Rd 41 in Autauga County. We had the property both West and East of 41. The southern property line is entrance to Southern Companies Plant Harris on the Alabama River. I bet I killed 50 deer on that place.

I center pinched my first one with a 270. Shot him head on. Bullet went in through the chest and exited out a buttcheek.

1990 Marengo county ,Thomaston Alabama at 180yds with 257 Roberts. 70+ deer in the field when I shot her

About 10 years old I think. Dog drive standing with my father. 20 gauge with number 3 buckshot. I can still see that doe in my minds eye jumping over a brush top. I shot her once as she crossed to the right of us and she ran about another 40 yards and dropped. I remember we counted 9 pellet holes in her right shoulder and rib cage when we dressed her later.

Remington 700 (whatever the cheap package is with a scope) in .243. I was 12 and he was a little forky mule deer in Red Willow County Nebraska.

First deer period - 9 or 10 years old doe with a bow sitting on the ground in edge of pasture by our house. First deer with a gun 13 or 14 years old Remington 700 270win kicked up a 3pt and a spike out of a brush pile in middle of field killed both. Spike stood up bang dropped him other one took off bang hit him went a little ways and fell over.

The year was 1994, November, when bucks were still together. I spine shot a year and a half old 12pt. First buck to come out. He had sticks coming out of everywhere on his antlers. Had to shoot him again, but I was prepared to do so. When I walked up to him, all the bucks that was with him ran off. One was huge. Gained a lot of knowledge that day. So did the deer.

16 years old, 1983 Jeep cj7 with a 4.2 liter. Dropped it in it’s tracks. Haven’t killed a deer since (yet.... this is my first year hunting anything but birds)

25 years old. Savage 7mag. Small button-head buck stepped out onto a foodplot late morning, he got about three steps in before I smoked him. Never have been so thrilled in my life, and I think my hunting buddy was just as pumped to see my get my first deer ever on his property. Man, good memories. Been a lot of deer killed since then, but that first one is always special. Looking forward to doing the same for someone in the future.

1970, I was 10 years old. Stevens side by side 12ga 00buck. Spike. The thrill, and the obsession, stayed with me until 4 years ago. Just hunt turkeys now.
I quit deer hunting for golf. They plant, water, and mow the grass. They keep up the tractors and golf carts. All I have to do is show up, play golf, and leave.

Doe in 1988 with REM 700 6mm. Was 12 yrs old and was also first hunt using new Amaker climber I'd got for Christmas.
