huuuuuuuuge buck - 02/19/19 02:42 PM

just saw an absolute monster with two does inside montgomery city limits. drove by and saw him making a rub, turned around and pulled over on the side of the road. huge mainframe 8. I got a picture of him but its kind of blury. wish I could have snapped a pic with him turned side ways to you could see the tine length. the picture I have doesn't do him justice

Is that over near Towne Lakes? I have been watching a stud around the solar panels. I have enjoyed watching him this season. That looks a lot like him but it could be anywhere around here.

There are some big deer in the city limits of Montgomery. I knew a guy who hunted a 30 acre wood lot in the city limits He and his Dad killed a few studs off of there and had some good ones on trail camera

There was one hit by a car on McLemore Road a couple of years ago that was that big or bigger. You can also see them off of the Atlanta Highway in the field where the old arrowhead trading post use to be. And BTW Billy Newell's pen in bucks aren't as big as the one in the pic.

I saw one that big on Park Crossing coming from Sturbridge Plantation in January heading to Hampsted for a beer. Y'all would be surprised at the big deer inside the city limits of Montgomery.

(if we are talking same place I think we are) there is a long driveway right there through one of those fields to a pretty nice house that was for sale/rent a few years ago. said they kill a good buck with a bow near about every year right there. Its pretty easy to find on aerial view. arrowhead neighborhood wraps completely around the property

Re: huuuuuuuuge buck - 02/19/19 08:47 PM

The long driveway thru the pinetrees is the Mclemore house. Supposively they were starting to mine gravel from 2000 acres of swamp that extended from the back of arrowhead to froggy bottom. Much of that land has never been accessed due to no roads prior to now / soon. No telling what critters are in that swamp.

I was checking the metadata, trying to see if his gps was on to see how close the deer was to my place.

If you are going East on Wares Ferry Road and past the Woods neighborhood and cross the bridge to the right before the cemetery, back in the late eighties and early nineties when that development was starting CT Thackston was the site contractor. Early one morning CT's son Tate Thackston was about to get on his dozier and huge gator wasn't having any of it. It lived in that swamp there and I think it measured well over ten foot. I don't know who killed it but there was a article in the Montgomery Advertiser about it. At that time it was very rare to see or know of Gators in the Montgomery area. Now it's as common as a pay day loan store.

I'm pretty sure there is something related to the antlers having a certain maximum size on the robo deer. You could put a set of 200" typical sheds on a robo deer and write tickets to a whole bunch of normally 100% law-abidding citizens. I was told one time, right or wrong, that if they are setting up the decoy, they use a typical Bama 8 pt because they are supposed to be targeting the outlaw road and night hunters and not trying to tempt the normal law abiding citizen into breaking the law. Some of the GWs or the ex GWs could probably chime in on this.

We went to Montgomery today and I saw lots of deer on the ride down and back. Actually saw some deer in town too...right there where you get off the Eastern Bypass onto 65 by the river, there's a planted powerline with a shooting house on it. When we left headed N this afternoon about 1:30 there were several deer standing in that green. Was also what looked like a dozen or more in the field behind Camo Country in Wetumpka.

That a mile from my office, and I pass it 10 or so times a day. Deer there a lot. There are 2 on the E side and one on the W side of the interstate right there. Saw a real good buck Monday the 11th there

There use to be some giants in the old Christmas tree farm between 85 and Atlanta highway. There was a 7 point that was a man there. Big 10 also.

Makes since. I've never shot a deer illegally, bit a 200 inch buck will change a man. I'd it's true good for them for not tempting the usual good.

Not that I had extensive conversation with him about it, but a friend of mine who is a game warden had one of them in his garage at one time and I remember it being a very average buck so there is probably truth to that mentality. It makes sense at least.

Maybe an otherwise law abiding hunter that got ticketed for shooting at a 200" fake deer at night would have better luck asserting an entrapment defense as opposed to poaching a 80-90" buck laugh Maybe if the judge was a deer hunter...and a little off his rocker lol

Re: huuuuuuuuge buck - 02/21/19 09:38 AM

Department policy used to be a decoy deer could only have up to a normal size 6 point rack, no big deer at all. Heck most of the time the shooter didn't even know if it had antlers or not. I used to carry a big 140" set of antlers for it in the truck for the outlaws to see. My best decoy would twitch its tail, turn its head, and walk 20 yards, all by remote control. Most fun I had working.

BhamFred a buddy and myself saw what we thought
was a deer decoy outside Oakman many years ago
It looked real but something didn’t seam right .
Later that day at a mini mart that cooked we heard
The story of a group of hunters tried to shoot the
thing . I bet that’s fun to watch!

Re: huuuuuuuuge buck - 02/21/19 11:24 PM

I've laughed so hard I cried at folks and the decoy. We videoed a lot of the cases for court, kind of hard to deny everything when it's on video.

we had two decoys set up on a big power line one day, maybe 150 yards off the small dirt road. This was near the Walker Co line at Rattlesnake. First truck the driver jumps out going up a hill, truck in gear. The truck rolled back and hit the truck behind it, but the driver was already out and shooting, as was the third truck in line. So three shooters, prolly 3-4 shots apiece before I could yell loud enough to stoop them. I think there was one hit.

Had another guy shoot twice before his buddy took the gun away and shot twice....
