Knocked down a nice one, backed out

Posted By: Cousneddy

Knocked down a nice one, backed out - 11/21/18 01:59 AM

I shot a nice one right at dark this afternoon, around 150 yards with a 308 shooting Barnes 110 grain TTSX handloads. Deer ran about 75 yards into uncut bean field and went down. I stayed on where he went down for a few minutes just in case he got up. I decided to go try to find him while I had just a little light, I was worried about finding him in the dark with no point of reference in the bean field. When I started walking through the beans he got up and was stumbling/running off, I got off another shot when he stopped again but don't think it connected. He left the field and I backed out, I am hoping he is laying just off the field edge, we don't have much property to work with in the direction he ran. I will be back looking for him at first light, wish me luck. I believe this is the deer I shot.

Good luck. I've had to wait overnight to find one, and it ain't fun.

Amazing how far some of them can run on a good kill zone hit.

A 110 from a 308? Must be singing. Why this choice though?

I sure you’ll find him.

Found lots of bone at first hit site, leg shot for sure. Ammon and Woodrow coming, I need some closure, sick at my stomach for making such a bad shot.

Good luck, I hope y’all find him soon.

I hope you learned a lesson about waiting and giving one time to bleed out. Going in after the shot often results in a lost deer. Unless you see or hear one crash, NEVER walk up and give it a chance to run off.

I think I was pushing my luck with available light, he stood in weeds with just his head visible for a while before he stepped out and gave me a clear shot. I had a good rest and don't think I pushed the shot.

I blew one's front leg off. Heard it flopping in the brush and knew it was a bad shot. I got down and chased it down and shot it. It would have bled out eventually. Yours should be easy to track.

Am I the only one scratching my head on this? The sectional density of the 110g barnes in .308 is pretty low. Don’t get me wrong I love Barnes bullets and shoot the 100g in my 25-06 but it has a much higher SD than the 110g .308. The 150g TTSX would be a much better choice for doing what you want

Re: Knocked down a nice one, backed out - 11/21/18 09:20 PM

I'm glad you found your buck but I'd be shooting 165gr bullets out of that.308 since the caliber was pretty much built around that weight and for good reason.

Ammon and Woodrow made quick work of this one, he was about 200 yards from where he got up in the bean field and about 100 yards inside the woods. Apparently the deer had turned to a hard quartering to when I shot, the bullet went through the fleshy part of the brisket and blew out the off side shoulder.

Things I did wrong:
did not make sure I had a good broadside shot
did not turn power down on scope as it got dark (realized this when i got the rifle out of the case this morning)

Things I did right:
backed out and resisted the urge to go looking for him last night
marked hit site this morning
resisted the urge to look for him this morning
CALLED THE MAN

I thought the deer took off on a death run after the shot when I saw it go down, that's why I immediately went to look for it. I honestly did not feel good about my chances for a recovery when I found all that bone and very little blood. I have learned a lot from these guys that track, they see more wounded deer in a season than most of us combined in a lifetime. I could have had 3 or 4 guys there this morning helping me look, and believe me they wanted to come. When in doubt, back out and call a dog!

God Woodrow didn't bite you. He's a bit touchy about his trophys. And even tho you're shooting the 110 ttsx that's a testament to how tough a bullet they are. Congrats on the recovery

Good call on backing out. Always smart on a afternoon hunt, no need to bump him in the dark and make it harder than it has to be. Waaaay easier to find next AM.
