I started out with Huntwise and really like the features and simplicity. Also, I could zoom in on an area and still view it without reception; the tracking features are nice but put a drain on the cell. Then a buddy suggested Huntstand, which I tried but didn't like as much.Next, I tried OnX - but hated it almost immediately. Finally, I broke down and got a used Garmin 64ST with the BaseCamp - best dang little gadget and worth the money if you can get one for cheap.
I mostly hunted by myself last year on some WMA's in Georgia and Alabama. As I discovered, allot of those places-when your in deep there is no cell reception (spotty at best). Letting the wife know where I was and where my spots were on a map was about all I could do help her find the body; the sooner she finds the body the sooner she can collect and go shopping.
Getting a true GPS PLB that doesn't use cellular services (satellite only) is pricey and usually has a monthly subscription attached to it - no room for this in my hunting allowance.
