Very good hunting app but my favorite is the No Bars App. Works just like I want it to work when I'm hunting.

Why would one need an application on a telephone for hunting?

Beats me. Maybe some folks need to find the nearest Starbucks to their hunting stand and pick up a half caf skinny latte on the way to their stand.

I really would like to know how a smart phone app could be useful in deer hunting. I will probably never use one. But would really like to know how or why one would be inclined.

Besides what’s already been mentioned, you have an aerial map of your property that you’re able to pin your stand locations on. With that you get weather data, such as wind direction. I can check this and decide whether or not to even attempt to hunt a particular stand. I use ScoutLook.

Since my dad passed a few years ago I mostly hunt by myself, until my brother and a buddy show up from out of State to rut hunt.

Which app will not only show where you are/on stand but it shows other people who also have the app where you are at?
So if you have an emergency they know where to find your body.

I use HuntStand the most. It has this feature, but I haven’t used it. You can make a “Friends List” of others with the app, then it can show your locations to each other.

I have a compass, and I usually know where the landlines are.
I've never been lost in the woods.
I get lost when I'm in a big city, but never in the woods.

OnX hunt is the best one I have used for where you are relative to property lines. Their offline maps are a great feature for when you don't have service too. You do have to pay for the property lines service though.

I got turned around in the woods at our hunting club in 1985 when I was 16. When I got home I bought one of those new fangled compass things and solved the problem. Still works, even when I don't have any bars like most areas of my hunting club.

I use OnX to mark stands via GPS (I can walk straight to my treestand in the morning before sunrise, no “bright eyes” trail markers telling others where I hunt, etc). This app clearly I.D.’s property lines. It also measures distance between two or more points, which is nice. And as others have said, it works when I have zero cell service. Using the app on the phone keeps me from having to tote a GPS unit.

I can see where that might be useful hunting unfamiliar ground.
But if I'm not looking at a phone screen, my night vision is pretty good.

Re: Best smartphone app for hunting? - 05/31/18 02:46 AM

I like being able to scout an area, mark a spot I like, then be able to see where it is in relation to the rest of the section, how close to a road etc..Makes it easier to find it later on,
Like to check wind direction when trying to decide between different stands. If blood trailing someone's deer, I can mark last blood, then go back next morning. Mine gives moon times, sun rise/set times. usually I'm done with the app before I leave the truck. Sometimes I scout a little on it while I'm hunting. Heck, two years ago I hadn't even owned a smart phone. I'm slowly getting into it. It's just a pocket full of entertainment.

I like huntstand, for a few bucks a year (could be $5 don't remember) it'll give you the property owners info also...

Re: Best smartphone app for hunting? - 05/31/18 09:12 AM

I started out with Huntwise and really like the features and simplicity. Also, I could zoom in on an area and still view it without reception; the tracking features are nice but put a drain on the cell. Then a buddy suggested Huntstand, which I tried but didn't like as much.Next, I tried OnX - but hated it almost immediately. Finally, I broke down and got a used Garmin 64ST with the BaseCamp - best dang little gadget and worth the money if you can get one for cheap.
I mostly hunted by myself last year on some WMA's in Georgia and Alabama. As I discovered, allot of those places-when your in deep there is no cell reception (spotty at best). Letting the wife know where I was and where my spots were on a map was about all I could do help her find the body; the sooner she finds the body the sooner she can collect and go shopping. thumbup Getting a true GPS PLB that doesn't use cellular services (satellite only) is pricey and usually has a monthly subscription attached to it - no room for this in my hunting allowance.

I use onx, but have the free version of huntstand as well.

I think Onx is the best for property lines/owner information.

Can't believe no one has said the Outdoor Alabama Pocket Ranger app... whistle

I use scoutlook and onx.

Re: Best smartphone app for hunting? - 05/31/18 05:46 PM

I would proffer Pocket Ranger, when it works right, if you are hunting in Alabama. All that other stuff is for the birds. Hunt the old fashioned way.

I use Huntstand and Scoutlook. Both are good. Each has advantages & disadvantages. Sometimes I find the Rayonier property maps on Huntstand have 1 tract split into multiple sections. Detail is right though. The scent cone on Scoutlook is a great feature. I use them both.

OnX is awesome. I could spend hours looking around on there

Re: Best smartphone app for hunting? - 06/11/18 02:16 AM

I use onX mainly. Sometimes I use huntstand for the weather app is more accurate per location then the where I usually check the weather. I use it to mark locations while I'm squirrel hunting/scouting to come back to during deer season with out using reflective markers tacks. I only hunt a small 50 acre patch of private land every where else I hunt is public land I use it the. For boundary lines and topo maps. It's nice to pick a saddle on a ridge to hunt before you leave the house when you've never set foot in that area before it really saves on foot work on public land. I also send my GPS coordinates to my brother or my wife if my brothers with me when I hunt it keeps mine and his wife off our back about from worrying about not being able to find us if something happened it keeps the off our back. I Think it's neat that during the off season I like to mark rubs and scares any where in can find them and you can visually look at rub line on a map

I have one called Backcountry Navigator that I bought years ago; I think it was $10 or so but there have been no charges since and it transfers without issue when I buy a new phone. I rarely open it in AL, but it sure comes in handy out of state. I've got turkey spots marked in 7 or 8 states. The GPS will work when you don't have a phone signal, but you have to download maps in advance for that to work.

I don't know that this is the best app, but it's the one I have and I'm not gonna buy another one and lose all my info.
