Deer age .5??

Deer age .5?? - 09/09/17 11:36 PM

I'll admit that is a little petty, but when a picture is posted about age and comments are made it's 90% of the time xxx 1/2 years old. No matter what time of the year. For example, Here in Alabama fawns, for the most part have just dropped or only a few weeks old. So a buck pic of a 4 year old deer taken Sept 10 cannot be 4.5 years old. And that that same buck cannot be 4.5 years old in Feb. Right?

Correct, I always get a chuckle when people call velvet pics in 1/2 year age classes. I believe it is a fad that hunting shows started, and it has just stuck in peoples heads.

The half comes in because the deer gestation period is approximately 6 months. Most deer IMO drop their fawns from July to September so you are correct when a guess is made on a deer age this time of year but if its the first of the year it'd be safe to apply the half.

Fawns drop down here in early May is the .5 would apply here. At the camp in Monroe co they drop in August so I think it would not apply.

you genious's need to study up. As long a breeding/fawning season as we have the damn deer COULD easily be at the .5 mark any month of the year. So don't say it couldn't/would not/ain't/wrongasallhellageguess.!!! grin grin

How old would the fawn I saw born in Dec be in August ??? grin grin

for the majority ya'll are right but don't state it as iron clad rule......

I agree, it bugs me to hear the "1/2" age no matter what time. We don't talk about humans or any other thing in that way, so why deer? They're just a whole age to me. "That's a 4 year old", for example.

But usually it's "Oh crap, that one's big!" laugh

Guess I should have said in my opinion most of the fawns we see appear to have been born in August because of out massive 2 day rut we have in Monroe co. And most fawns appear to be born in May here at home. Is that better counselor. rofl

Buck I killed last year was 4 years 5 months 21 days 3 hours old. I could tell by checking the rings on his umbilical cord.

Easiest way to avoid this is by not allowing it to bother you. You know what they mean, it's just a habit. Just like calling a magazine a clip. We ALL KNOW it's not a clip, it's just a magazine.

Take it easy Fred, relax and have another cup of coffee. Nobody is claiming to be a scholar on deer mating rituals but we all appreciate you calling us a genius. I've ben called much worse but accepted it as a compliment considering who it came from grin

I use whole number ages. That half year crap is ridiculous. You don't tell the Dr your half year ages or the license department or anyone else do you?

Since you have ruled out coffee as the culprit, what is the explanation? laugh

Just think your confusion is exactly the same for everyone else in the country when we tell them the rut is in February... Alabama is in a world of its own...
