FOOD PLOTS - 10/25/16 07:29 AM

How is your food plots doing ? What is your plan for the plots when and if we get any rain ? Over seeding ?

Re: FOOD PLOTS - 10/25/16 07:56 AM

We havn't planted yet, and I'm not going to waste money on seed, fertilizer, tractor and other stuff till we get some appreciable amount of rain. It will take a slow two or three inch rain to help much. The forecast thru Nov 3 is less than 5% chance of rain. I might plant oats or rye with rye grass just to have something green, depending if we have rain.

I haven't even bought anything yet. I'm beginning to wonder if this will be "the year we didn't have food plots". Never had that happen in my life that I remember.

We planted early last week because rain was in the forecast ahead of that front. Well...it didn't even hardly wet the ground. I too have thought we may go a whole year without green fields. To answer the question, our fields are just large places of dirt. That's it.

Next chance of rain I'm going to plant no matter what. I bought seed about two months ago.

Re: FOOD PLOTS - 10/25/16 08:38 AM

I bought seed early and planted in September. This will be the first year since the early 90's when i started planting plots, that i wont have any for bow season. My seed is under a layer of thatch, or at least i hope it is. I haven't seen a lot of scratching by turkeys, but have seen some. I'm not buying anymore seed. Screw it. I hope when it rains, the seed that is there will sprout, if not, oh well.

Re: FOOD PLOTS - 10/25/16 08:44 AM

We had tilled and planted the plots in Covington Co. several weeks ago. I had been waiting on 1 small plot ( 1 acre) but finally planted it with BFO and WI Pure Attraction this weekend because of the possibility of rain this week that has now disappeared. Before I could cover the seed with my cart and harrow drag my batteries were dying. The WI product should be fine if it ever rains. My question is should I go back this weekend and drag the plot because I know the BFO needs to be covered or should I just take my chances. I have enough to redo the planting if necessary. We have a fair amount of turkeys that may eat the seeds before I make it back up there.

I planted a couple of weeks ago and the ones around the house got some rain and are up looking good. I haven't been to the camp yet but I'm sure its still powder up there. Might have to broadcast corn in my dirt fields and hunt over that all year lol.

Planted last weekend. The seed will be fine in the ground until it rains if the Turkey's don't dig it all up.

Re: FOOD PLOTS - 10/25/16 09:53 AM

You mean dirt plots????

Our seed, planted a month ago just before a forecast rain, was slightly cut into the dirt and then was overseeded with the small seed. It rained the next day but nothing since. Not good. Overseeded again with the small seed stuff.

Hopefully when the rains come, we will have at least something coming up.

Planted early October. Some shades spots look ok despite the lack of rain.

If we don't get rain soon, I might overseed late with sweet ryegrass.

Re: FOOD PLOTS - 10/25/16 02:08 PM

I got the fertilizer out and plots are tilled and smooth powder and ready for seed. I'm not broadcasting it until I see rain in the sky.

At this point, I'm just hoping to have something to hunt over in January and February.

Might be a very interesting gun season in November with hardly anyone having any plots.

Re: FOOD PLOTS - 10/25/16 03:08 PM

We spread fertilizer, lime and disked it in about three weeks go. The seed is still stacked in the shed. I thought by now it would have rained. I've waited this long so I guess I'll wait some more.

I sat on an unplanted, dirt plot Sunday. I don't bow hunt and was hoping to see a hog. I had three does, a spotted fawn and a six point in the plot kicking dirt and searching under piles of thatch. I was surprised that I even saw one deer.

Re: FOOD PLOTS - 10/25/16 04:05 PM

I like to plant in early November. My place is in Barbour county and we have a late Jan rut peak, so I want my plots young and tender then. I've tried planting early, late and in between, but what works best for me is planting and fertilizing the first part of Nov. and hitting the plots with ammonia nitrate around Dec.20. Some of you that have never planted late may be in for a pleasant surprise.

I planted mine last Thursday when it rained, I hope I didn't waste my time and money. There's a slight chance of rain again for this Thursday, I sure hope we get it!

Gonna put seed out Saturday and hope for the best. Only have one spot to plant anyway.

Re: FOOD PLOTS - 10/26/16 04:15 PM

I'm planting this weekend, but I'm in SW Alabama. I've heard it said - plant by 9/15 or go ahead and wait until 11/1. I tend to plant in the last two weeks of October. I'm not a big food plot hunter myself. I like the woods, clear cuts, or edges.

yep... would be the first time in 20 years for us (that's when we started planting). Put out seed on the 15th with hopes of getting rain from the front that came thru last Thur. Barely got a drizzle. Two miles away they got 4/10". really sucks that this was the year we re-planted our clover fields...not cheap
