Hornady SST? - 07/22/16 10:32 PM

anyone use these? I picked up some 308 165 grain. I've heard mixed reviews on this ammunition. A buddy of mine has em and liked em this past season so I picked up 2 boxes.. They shoot really good at the target. but what about deer?

Kilt a bunch of full grown bucks and a train load of does with them. I shoot 150 gr through a .308.

I killed my biggest with SST's, but 12 gauge SST slugs not 308.

No.

Me neither. I've used 140 grain SST in a 270 Win.

My brother shoots sst's. I believe 130 gr. In his 270. He has killed a few nice bucks with them and quite a few does. Only cartridge he shoots. Has never had a negative thing to say about them.

I like the Hornady 168 grain BTHP's. Suh weet hand load.

Re: Hornady SST? - 07/23/16 06:03 AM

I killed my first three deer with the 150's without any real issue.

How's expansion/weight retention?

Re: Hornady SST? - 07/23/16 07:14 AM

There are better bullets but in a 308 with 150 or 168 grains they are good. I have used them some in my 300 savage because I wanted quick expansion at the lower velocity. Good for youth velocity loads too. I wouldn't use them in smaller fast caliber like say a 25-06.

Re: Hornady SST? - 07/23/16 07:32 AM

I shoot the 150's out of a .30-06 and haven't had one take a step yet.

What's your favorite 300 Savage load? I have one but haven't hunted with it yet. I also have die set and a lot of brass for it too.

I shot 3 deer with that bullet and all 3 were pass through shots. Hole going in was small but the aftermath was destruction. Only 1 ran and it only ran about 50 yards but the blood trail was easy to follow. The other 2 dropped in their tracks. It tells you on the box that they should not be used for hunting but that's hogwash as far as I've seen so far.

No choke - I was using a rifled slug barrel.

Re: Hornady SST? - 07/23/16 08:23 AM

I reload my 308 with 165 sst, killed 1 doe last year with them , no issues to speak of and I get very good accuracy out to 300 yards.

Re: Hornady SST? - 07/23/16 08:53 AM

Not a fan...They look great and are really accurate. However, they dont expand like a core-lock. Hornady makes a core-lock version (Interlock) that is excellent for whitetail. It expands very good upon impact. I love all Hornady products, but made the swich from SST to Interlocks 2 years ago. Havent had one run yet. BTW, shot placement is everything but Ive had a big buck run 75 yards with his heart blown completely out of his chest. They are really tuff animals.

It's the only thing that's been fired out of my 30-06.

Re: Hornady SST? - 07/23/16 07:35 PM

Great on paper but I quit shooting deer with them. Just did not like the terminal performance.

Re: Hornady SST? - 07/23/16 08:26 PM

Son shot his first buck with one in 7-08. Great shot placement, but no exit. Deer ran about 60 yards into thick pines but no blood to follow. Just happened to find him. Internal damage was great, but found both lead and copper jacket separated under skin on opposite side.

It did what it was supposed to do, dump all its energy in the animal, but he still ran with no trail to follow. I love when deer go bang-flop, but if they run, I want a blood trail to follow. Have switched to barnes TTSX that I reload for him. Buck he shot with one of those had perfect shot placement again, deer ran 20 yards into a pine tree. Spewing blood the whole way

Re: Hornady SST? - 07/23/16 08:57 PM

well I'm either going with the SST or interlock

Re: Hornady SST? - 07/23/16 09:12 PM

I used to shoot both sst and interlock when I had 30-06. One of the biggest holes I ever saw in a deer was the exit on a young deer shot at close range with one of those.

I use the 130gr in my .270
Very reliable performance.

Re: Hornady SST? - 07/23/16 10:52 PM

worst hunting bullet ever IMO...

Re: Hornady SST? - 07/23/16 11:40 PM

You'll hear very different opinions on this bullet. The basis of the bullet is the interlock design, but it has a polymer tip. Apparently the way that tip interacts with the rest of the bullet makes its behavior trend toward a Nosler ballistic tip type performance.

My only experience is my son shot a buck with a reduced recoil 120 gr SST 7mm08 last season. No exit wound but he dropped at the shot and his inside were liquid.

Re: Hornady SST? - 07/25/16 06:26 AM

I started shooting them when they first came out and haven't looked back. I shoot a 165 grain .300 win mag SST. 99% DRT. I've killed over 100 deer with them and never had a problem. Everyone has their own opinion. If there was something inferior about the bullet wouldn't i have found it over the last 12 years and 100 deer? It's not a ballistic tip and doesn't act like one either. It does leave devastating wound channels, but holds together better.
